This old favorite is perhaps the most popular of all the African cichlids, with the possible exception of some of the Rift Lake species. It is a colorful, though variable, species in which the females always appear to be full of eggs and exhibit a particularly striking, reddish belly patch (not so pronounced in males). A well-matched pair make excellent parents. A large morph (possibly a separate species), usually referred to as Pelvicachromis cf. pulcher (Giant), is also available.
