This challenging fish, known in the hobby since the early 1 900s, has never been available in large numbers. Contrary to reports (and its common name), the Butterflyfish does not “fly” i.e. it does not flap its winglike pectoral fins. It is, however, able to glide for short distances.
Africa is home to a wide range of unique and fascinating fish. The fossil record shows that some of these, notably the African lungfish (see opposite), have altered relatively little over millions of years.
For anyone looking for something a little out of the ordinary, nothing could be better than the butterfly fish. Known scientifically as Pantodon buchholzi, it is a surfacedwelling predator.
