Of the 30 or so species in this genus, two are seen much more often than any others: the Arabian Killifish and A. mento (Black Persian Minnow or Killifish, mainly from Israel and Turkey). Two subspecies of Arabian Killifish are generally recognized: A. d. dispar and A. d. richardsoni (from Jordan). Both have similar aquarium requirements. Aphanius mento, on the other hand, has lower temperature requirements (50-77°F, or 10-25°C). It can also tolerate wider pH and hardness ranges (from slightly acid and soft to alkaline and hard).

This is probably the most spectacularly colored of all the Rivulus species. It is also one of the smallest and more challenging members of the genus and is definitely not a fish for beginners. It has a life span of about two and a half years. Females are smaller than the males, and they lack the blue-and-orange coloration. Instead, they have a dark gray vertical band.

Unlike some other members of the family, Rivulus species do not bury their eggs. If pools dry out in the wild, the eggs of some species may withstand desiccation for a while, but they do not go into the extended resting period (diopause) exhibited by annual species. Rivulus species tend to live for 18 months or more, and Green Rivulus has a life span of up to four years.

Two subspecies of A. chaperi are known: Chaper’s Panchax (A. c. chaperi) and Schreiber’s Panchax {A. c. schreiberi). Both have varying numbers of backward-slanting, narrow, oblique dark bands that are more pronounced in females than in males. However, in both subspecies of A. chaperi the body is somewhat sturdier than in A. annulatus (Clown Killifish), and the caudal fin lacks the central fin ray extensions.

Traditionally, the Clown Killifish and its closest relatives have been classified as Epiplatys. In 1990, following an earlier paper on the subject, Scheel (see Further Reading) placed Epiplatys within Aplocheilus. Owing to distinct body patterning and unique color distribution on the caudal fin, along with some skeletal and behavioral differences, Scheel also regarded A. annulatus as in a sufficiently “isolated position in Aplocheilus” to warrant its own subgenus, Pseudepiplatys (already considered as a valid genus by some earlier authors).
