This is a slender fish that only looks its best when water and tank conditions are right. At other times the red coloration responsible for the common name, and which makes a shoal of these rasboras an absolute delight, fades significantly.
Subfamily
- Rasborinae (Danioninae)
Distribution
- Thailand and western Malaysia.
Size
- 2in (5cm).
Behavior
- A peaceful shoaler. Diet: Most small foods accepted, but livefoods preferred.
Aquarium
- For best effect, lighting should not be too bright (floating plants will help diffuse it). Open swimming spaces and abundant vegetation should be provided. Soft, slightly acid water (perhaps filtered through peat) recommended. Temperature range: 72-79F (22-26C).
Breeding
- Egg-scattering and egg-eating species. Shallow water is therefore recommended. Hatching takes about 1 1/2 days.
