The danios {Brachydanio and Danio species) are all active shoalers and have been part of the hobby for many years. The Pearl Danio was first imported into Europe in 1911 and is still very popular today. This is despite the fact that it is not often displayed to maximum effect and therefore does not always show off its best colors. Two forms of the Pearl Danio are generally available (although several more exist): the wild type and, less frequently, a yellow morph usually referred to as the Yellow Danio.
Subfamily
- Rasbonnae (Danioninae)
Distribution
- Southeast Asia.
Size
- Up to 2 1/2in (6cm); usually smaller.
Behavior
- Very active shoaler that prefers the upper layers of the water column, but will swim at all levels.
Diet
- Most livefoods and commercial diets are accepted.
Aquarium
- A well-covered aquarium with ample swimming areas should be provided, with no tall plants obstructing this space (tall plants are best arranged around the sides and back of the aquarium). Water chemistry is not critical, but overall quality must be good. Temperature range: 68-77 F (20-25 C); a little higher for breeding.
Breeding
- Chances of success are enhanced if two males and a female are introduced into a breeding tank placed in a sunny position. This is an egg-scattering, egg-eating species. Hatching takes about 36-48 hours.
