This relatively large cichlid species is exceptionally marked. In particular, the brown body patches on a light-colored base, coupled with the red tinge of the anal fin of males, make it a striking fish even among more spectacularly colored species. Livingstoni has an unusual habit of lying on its side on the bottom for long periods, feigning death. This technique allows it to seize any suitable prey that comes along to investigate.
