Pikelike characins, including the Spotted Cachorro, are grouped together according to certain body characteristics—usually the depth of the body in relation to its length. The A. falcatus group or complex is distinguished by its body depth being 4.0 to 4.75 times shorter than its body length. Members of other groups are hardly ever encountered in the hobby, while the Spotted Cachorro itself is only occasionally imported.
